Chronic Disease Self-Care Checklist

December 5, 2019

Suffering from a chronic disease is something that impacts every aspect of a patient’s life. Each decision they make will somehow connect back to their disease, and this can become a suffocating feeling.

To avoid being buried under depression because of your chronic illness, use a care checklist to keep everything on track. Additionally, make sure you visit an urgent care center that can help manage chronic disease risks!

Know Your Condition

Learn as much about your condition as you possibly can. When you’re diagnosed, your doctor will give you some info, but take the time to research more on your own. Many chronic diseases have support groups online to share your story, ask questions, and compare symptoms with other people that have a similar chronic illness. The more you know about your condition, the more you’ll feel like you’re in control of it rather than it being in control of you and your life.

Devise a Treatment Plan That Works for You

Work with your doctor to find a treatment plan that best works for you. Ideally, this means it will manage your symptoms without impeding on your day to day life. You may need to try multiple doctors before you find one that you click with the best, and that’s okay!

You should have a treatment plan and a physician that you’re 100% comfortable maintaining. This process may take a while, and it’s easy to get discouraged, but try to find the positives in each and every day.

Make Healthy Changes

Ask your doctor what healthy changes you can make in your life to improve your disease or overall health. Even if healthy changes don’t improve the condition, they will improve your health in other ways and help you to feel the best you possibly can. Making healthy changes will help you to appreciate the body that you have, despite your disease.

Begin eating better, exercising, and focusing on yourself when it counts. Don’t underestimate the importance of positive changes for your mental health, too, especially with a new chronic disease diagnosis! Set aside time for yourself, write a journal, or even see a therapist if you think it would help you to cope.

Have an Open Line of Communication

If you’re in need of immediate treatment and urgent medical care for your chronic condition and your physician isn’t available, your local urgent care may be able to help. As a chronic disease sufferer, it’s important to know where your emergency treatment centers are located, so take the time to get familiar with what’s around you!
