Even though many people, especially athletes, believe their bodies are invincible, the truth is no one is immune to injuries. One of the most common sports related injuries, ankle sprains, can happen not only on the athletic field or court, but simply by stepping off a curb and landing incorrectly as well. At AFC Urgent Care, we understand that accidents can happen both on and off the playing field, which is why our staff is available seven days a week to treat patients.

A sprained ankle occurs when a person awkwardly lands on their ankle, resulting in a feeling of their foot “rolling” or “twisting” underneath them. In a healthy ankle, tissue, or ligaments help restrict the movement of bones within the ankle joint. When an ankle is sprained, the ligaments holding the ankle bones in place are torn or stretched past their healthy range of motion. Ultimately, it is this unnatural movement of ligaments that causes the pain experienced with a sprained ankle.

Stretching your legs, including your ankles, is one of the most recommended ways to prevent spraining an ankle. Taping ankles, and wearing high-topped sneakers are also good preventative measures to use when you are going to participate in athletic activities. However, even with these preventative measures in place, ankle sprains can still occur. While most sprained ankles are minor and do not require professional medical care, it is still very important to have go-to source for injury treatment.

Here at AFC Urgent Care, we are able to provide treatment to patients on a walk-in basis. For sprained ankles, we are able to administer an evaluation or X-ray to determine the severity of the sprain. If needed, our staff of board-certified medical professionals can provide a splint to help stabilize the sprain and assist in the healing process.

For walk-in treatment for sprained ankles or any other acute injury, visit us any day of the week – no appointment necessary!
