We couldn’t wait for warmer weather…well, now it’s here! Summer is well underway and with the sun and fun comes a number of safety concerns to keep in mind. With the right tools and preparation, summertime can be a safe and relaxing time for you and your family.

  • Hydration: As the mercury rises this summer, pay close attention to your hydration. With increased temperatures and outdoor activities, our bodies tend to lose more water through evaporation and sweat. Sports drinks are great, but nothing beats H2O. A good goal is 6-8 8oz. glasses of water a day and even more if exercising or spending time out in the heat.
  • Sun Protection: Limit sun exposure between 10am-4pm when the sun is at its strongest. Apply sunscreen (at least an SPF of 15 or higher) even on cloudy days and SPF 30+ if outdoors for an extended period of time. Reapply often. And remember, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying those beautiful beach or pool views from under an umbrella in the shade. It’s better to be safe than sunburned!
  • Pool/Beach Safety: Children (and anyone who can’t swim) should wear life jackets at all times when participating in any water-related sport or activity. Stay aware of your surroundings and follow all rules and policies of the pool or beach areas. Never swim alone and be sure to look out for those who may be in danger.

If you do need medical attention this summer, American Family Care is here to help, seven days a week with no appointment necessary. Get the care you need, when you need it — at a fraction of the cost and wait time of an emergency room. Find your nearest American Family Care location today.

Summer fun can quickly be cut short by sunburn or an accident. Staying prepared can enhance your summer activities without having to sacrifice any of the fun.
