Can Psoriasis Go Away?

November is National Healthy Skin Month, which is a perfect time to discuss a common skin condition that many Americans face—psoriasis.

In fact, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation, approximately 125 million people worldwide have the condition. Let’s take a close look at this skin condition that affects so many and how people with psoriasis can find relief.

What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes itchy patches of raised, red, thick scales on the skin. The skin condition is usually found on the knees, elbows, and scalp. However, psoriasis can also be found on the legs, nails, and trunk.

The main cause of psoriasis is when the immune system starts attacking healthy skin cells for no reason. Strep throat has been known to be a trigger for psoriasis.

Symptoms of Psoriasis

  • Red, raised, inflamed patches of skin

  • Whitish-silver scales or plaques on the red patches

  • Dry skin that may crack and bleed

  • Soreness around patches

  • Itching and burning sensations around patches

  • Thick, pitted nails

  • Painful, swollen joints

Can Psoriasis Be Prevented?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for psoriasis.

However, there are things you can do to prevent and treat psoriasis flare-ups, such as by avoiding cold, dry environments, eating an anti-inflammatory diet and moisturizing regularly.

Treatment for Psoriasis

  • Topical corticosteroids

  • Vitamin D analogues

  • Anthralin

  • Topical retinoids

  • Calcineurin inhibitors

  • Salicylic acid

  • Coal tar

  • Moisturizers
