Do All Bug Bites Itch?- AFC Urgent Care

While every bug bite isn’t quite the same, bug bites in general cause the same types of side effects: They swell up and itch.

Even though they cause uncomfortable symptoms, most bug bites and stings that people get during the spring aren’t causes for serious concern. Read on to learn more from our AFC Urgent Care Monroe Road team!

How Can I Treat a Bug Bite?

Most insect bites and stings cause minor, local reactions. This means that the redness, itchiness and swelling only occur around the actual site of the injury, rather than spreading to another area of the body.

If you think your bite or sting is only resulting in a mild, local skin reaction, the treatment tips that we’ve listed below can prove to be quite helpful!

How to Treat Insect Injuries

  • Remove any stingers.
  • Gently wash the area with soap and water.
  • Apply a damp rag soaked in cold water or ice to the area of the bite or sting for 10 to 20 minutes. This helps reduce pain and swelling.
  • Take an OTC pain reliever as needed.
  • If the injury is on an arm or leg, elevate it.

How Long Will Bug Bites or Stings Last?

While the initial bite or sting only lasts for a split second, they can cause side effects for around 10 days. Although redness usually goes away in around three days, swelling and itchiness typically last for a week or more.

We know 10 days can seem like a lot at the time, but if you think your symptoms and side effects are improving, you don’t need to seek any medical care for your insect injury. However, if your bite or sting shows the symptoms that we’ve listed below, it’s likely infected. Visit our AFC center ASAP if this happens to you!

Signs a Bug Bite Is Infected

  • A wide area of redness around the bite
  • Swelling around the bite
  • Pus
  • Increasing pain
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Feeling of warmth around the bite
  • Long red line extending out from the bite
  • Sores or abscesses on or around the bite
  • Swollen glands (lymph nodes)
