Can I Stay Healthy Throughout the Holiday Season?

November 15, 2023

We love the holiday season in the Charlotte area, and we are sure you do as well. The delicious food, holiday traditions, cozy evenings by the fire and flowing drinks can make this a wonderful time of year for everyone. However, all of these joyous celebrations can be hard on your body.

Running around trying to find the perfect present or staying up late trying to reconfigure that elf into yet another creative situation can cause your body to become rundown and you can easily become sick.

Our AFC Urgent Care Monroe Road team explains some easy ways to stay on track with your health goals while avoiding infection, so read on to learn more.

Why Do Infections Spread Faster in the Winter?

We are more vulnerable to infections at this time of year for a variety of reasons. To start, we are spending much more time in large groups for family celebrations, office parties and other seasonal events. Infections quickly spread in close-knit populations, so you can be exposed every time you leave the house.

While we cannot completely avoid coming into contact with infections at this point in the year, taking care of your body can go a long way toward supporting a stronger immune system. Eat well, exercise regularly and get between seven and nine hours of quality sleep every night. Your body needs these three things in order to fight off infection more effectively.

Staying Healthy Through the Winter

  • Bundle up when it is cold outside.
  • Get your flu vaccine.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Wash your hands.

Can I Eat Healthier During the Holidays?

We know that the holidays are notorious for rich, cozy comfort food, which can make it harder to make healthy choices throughout the season. Enjoying everything in moderation is always encouraged! Grab a smaller plate or limit your portion sizes, and try to avoid excess sugar and sodium when you are able to. When you are finished with your meal, suggest a family walk to get in a little movement after eating.

Another aspect of healthy eating during the holidays centers around avoiding foodborne illnesses! Avoid eating any undercooked meat or cookie batter, as raw meat or eggs can harbor salmonella. Eat any perishable foods as soon as they are ready to be eaten and store leftovers promptly. Even just two hours of counter time for certain foods can increase the risk of bacterial growth.

Additional Kitchen Safety Tips

  • Use designated cutting boards for raw meat and produce.
  • Wash hands before handling food.
  • Don’t cook for others when you aren’t feeling well.
  • Understand specific allergies or dietary restrictions for those attending your party.

We wish you a safe and happy holiday season! Come see us at AFC Urgent Care Monroe Road if you aren’t feeling well.
