Am I Just Dizzy Or Do I Have Vertigo?

Vertigo can often be misdiagnosed as general dizziness, but they are actually very different sensations! Dizziness is typically a temporary symptom that is the result of an illness or something like dehydration, whereas vertigo is caused by an issue with the balance inside your inner ear.

While both conditions can be difficult to manage, it is important to know which one you are suffering from so you can seek the appropriate treatment. Check out our latest blog about vertigo from our team at AFC Urgent Care Monroe Road below!

Where Does Dizziness Come From?

If you are experiencing dizziness, it is usually because of some sort of imbalance within your entire body. You may constantly feel slightly off-center and may have trouble moving around.

Most often, it is a symptom you experience when your body is in need of something. It can often be fixed with rest, water, food or sleep.

Reasons for Dizziness

  • Dehydration
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Low blood sugar or blood pressure
  • Iron deficiency anemia

Where Does Vertigo Come From?

Vertigo isn’t a disease or illness, rather, it is a symptom resulting from an imbalance in your ear canal. The delicate structures of your ear canals are responsible for maintaining your center of gravity. When they have been disrupted, vertigo can appear.

The most common treatment plan for vertigo is centered on symptom management, as most cases will fade away within a day or two. Try some anti-nausea medications or chew on some ginger candies to help your stomach, and move about your day slowly while avoiding sudden movements.

Other Symptoms of Vertigo

  • Intense spinning or world shifting sensations
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
  • Motion sickness

If your vertigo becomes severe or is recurrent, you should be evaluated by a medical provider. Drop by AFC Urgent Care Monroe Road to be seen quickly!
