Sleeping is an activity that is loved by all, and luckily there are benefits to sleep which everyone can enjoy.

Sleeping is more than just closing your eyes for 7 to 8 hours. It is a time where the body recovers, including the brain. There have been various studies to find out why we sleep, and its effect on our bodies. The results? Sleep is vital for us to function. It has an impact on metabolism, memory, the immune system, and more.

Theories About Why We Sleep

Everyone and everything sleeps, but why?

Some theories suggest the following:

  • Conserve Energy: One theory suggests sleeping is to conserve energy. From an evolutionary point of view, the energy was conserved during sleep at night and then used during the day for gathering. In today’s world, people would sleep to conserve energy, to then go to work, using their power.
  • Survival of the Fittest: For most animals, danger strikes at night. Sleeping and being idle allows you to stay out of danger.   
  • Brain Plasticity Theory: It is theorized sleeping allows the brain to organize and structure itself. Babies and teens, going into adulthood, develop and strengthen the learning process with sleep.  Recovery: It is said while we sleep, growth hormones are released. Also, muscle growth and tissue repair occur during sleep.

The Various Benefits of Sleep

Think about a time where you got the best sleep of your life. More than likely, you benefitted with the following:

  • Improved learning process: Acquisition, consolidation, and recall are the three stages of the learning process. The acquisition is the entry of new information, consolidation processes the data, and recall is the ability to access the new information. Sleeping well allows this process to be fully capable. 
  • Better Memory: A functioning memory can be the result of a good night’s sleep. Declarative and procedural are two types of memory processes. Declarative recall facts, while procedural remembers “how” to do something. 
  • Elevated Mood: Having a full night’s sleep has been shown to increase mood, resulting in a more happier and energetic you.
