Is It Normal for Kids to Get Headaches?

Anyone can experience headaches, including your children! Headaches are one of the most common conditions across all age groups, so there is no immediate cause for worry if your child comes to you complaining of head pain.

However, there are some rare instances where head pain is indicative of a medical emergency. Our AFC Urgent Care Athens, TN team wants you to be equipped with the knowledge you need to notice these signs and symptoms, so read on!

How Can I Tell What Is Causing My Child’s Headache?

If your child is little or is still figuring out how to effectively communicate, it can be hard to discuss symptoms with him or her! If your little one cannot tell you where pain is or how it hurts, that makes figuring out a cause even more difficult. This is why it is important to keep a clear eye on any symptom progression or change in behavior.

At the onset of the pain complaint, try some simple at home remedies first! Water, food and a quiet or dark room can help relieve some of the more common reasons for headaches. If none of that works or if your child’s pain is getting worse, it is time to watch for any other emerging symptoms. Although rare in children, serious conditions like blood clots, tumors and strokes are all possibilities and are typically accompanied by secondary symptoms. These symptoms can emerge quickly or over time, so keep a close watch on your child.

Secondary Symptoms to Watch for

  • Sudden and severe pain
  • Pain accompanied by a high fever
  • Stiff neck
  • Vision or personality changes
  • Numbness or paralysis on the body

Can I Self-Diagnose My Child’s Headache?

You know your child best! If you know that he or she gets frequent headaches when stressed or dehydrated, you can certainly try those relief methods on your own first.

It is also important to know when the situation requires medical attention and act accordingly. Any severe or sudden pain, or any headaches alongside those warning signs above should prompt an immediate medical visit. We can help with an initial evaluation and if you need further assistance, we can help you navigate that process as well.

Relieving a Headache at Home

  • Provide water.
  • Encourage plenty of rest in a quiet, dark room.
  • Offer an OTC pain reliever or anti-inflammatory.
  • Turn off the TV and cell phone screens.

Headaches are something to always take seriously. If your child is experiencing frequent headaches, stop by AFC Urgent Care Athens, TN for a diagnosis.
