Can the Flu Shot Give Me the Flu?

April 29, 2021

It is the debate many have been having for years. Can the flu shot give you the flu?

That's an easy one—the answer is no. And the flu vaccine is your best defense against getting the flu.

But if you do come down with the flu this season, our team at AFC Urgent Care West Islip wants you to know what to do. Read on as we offer some insight.

How Long Does the Flu Last?

If you've ever had the flu, you know that it seems to linger forever. And while it doesn't actually stick around forever, some of the symptoms can be around for up to a few weeks.

Fortunately, if you begin treating the flu as soon as possible, you may able to shorten its duration and intensity.

Flu Treatment

  • Take antiviral medication, if prescribed.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Treat aches and fever with OTC medications.
  • Use a humidifier.

Will the Flu Cause Back Pain?

One of the first symptoms of the flu virus is extreme fatigue. However, muscle aches and pains are not too far behind.

As a result, pain in your back, especially when accompanied with other symptoms of the flu virus, can certainly signal that you are suffering from the flu. You'll want to treat the individual symptoms you are experiencing and can often find relief with OTC meds.

Other Symptoms of the Flu

  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting
