What Is Included in a Physical Exam?

A camp, sports, or school physical also called a pre-participation physical exam (PPE) is designed to evaluate overall health and determine if it’s safe to participate in physical activity.

Each visit includes two essential components:

Medical History Review

  • This portion of the exam helps identify any underlying conditions that could affect participation. Our AFC provider will review:
  • Personal and family medical history
  • Past injuries such as fractures, sprains, or concussions
  • Existing conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart concerns
  • Allergies to medications, foods, or environmental triggers
  • Symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath
  • Current medications, including over-the-counter and supplements
  • Mental health factors like stress, anxiety, or attention concerns

Having a parent or guardian present for younger patients is especially helpful to ensure accurate information.

Physical Examination

  • After reviewing your history, we will complete a full physical assessment, which typically includes:
  • Height, weight, and BMI measurements
  • Blood pressure and heart rate checks
  • Vision and hearing screenings
  • Evaluation of heart, lungs, and abdominal health
  • Examination of ears, nose, and throat
  • Assessment of posture, joint function, strength, and flexibility

Additional screenings may be recommended depending on the patient’s age or health background.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Physicals Matter for Active Lifestyles

Physical exams are an important step in preventing injuries and identifying health concerns early. Even healthy individuals can have underlying conditions that may not show symptoms right away.

During your visit, our providers may identify concerns such as:

  • Respiratory conditions that affect endurance
  • Past injuries that haven’t fully healed
  • Risk factors for heat-related illness during warmer months
  • Signs of overtraining or muscle imbalance

We also provide practical guidance to help reduce injury risk, including tips on proper stretching, hydration, conditioning, and protective equipment especially valuable during Oregon’s warmer summer activities.

When to Get Your Physical

For the best results, schedule your physical at least 6–8 weeks before the start of the school year, sports season, or camp session. This allows time for any follow-up care, additional testing, or specialist referrals if needed.

Last-minute physicals are still available at our urgent care clinic, but planning ahead helps avoid delays in participation
