If you have recently come into contact with a poison ivy plant and are starting to develop an irritating and uncomfortable rash, here are a few things you can do to prevent the rash from spreading and treat the discomfort.

  1. Immediately rinse your skin with warm water
  2. Wash all clothing and anything that may have come into contact with the oils
  3. Do not scratch the affected areas, this can lead to further infection
  4. Consider a calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream to reduce the itch
  5. Apply cool compresses to the itchy skin
  6. Consider taking antihistamine pills
