Are the Falling Leaves Giving You Allergies?

October 19, 2023

As the weather begins to cool, the landscapes outside begin to shed their leaves. This time of year is well known for the illnesses that emerge, such as colds and the flu. However, allergies are also at an all time high in the early fall months. Learn about what causes fall allergies and how to manage their symptoms.

Do Falling Leaves Cause Allergies?

Falling leaves create a beautiful end to the summer months across much of the U.S. However, this display has its downfall - the increase of allergens in the air. When leaves die and fall off of their tree, they collect on the ground. The wet conditions in fall create a perfect formula for mold to grow, which is a common allergen. This mold is taken airborne as people, animals and cars kick them up in their passing. Once the mold spores are airborne, we can breathe them in which can give us irritating allergy symptoms.

Common fall allergy symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Congestion
  • Sore Throat
  • Headache
  • Watery or Itchy Eyes

Fall allergies can also be caused by the seasonality of certain plans, such as ragweed which is also a common allergy.

Fall Allergy vs Fall Illness Symptoms

Unfortunately, fall allergy symptoms overlap with the early symptoms of many different illnesses that are also common in the fall. This can make it difficult to determine whether you’re actually sick, or just having allergy symptoms. This can lead to increased exposure to contagious viruses, and make illnesses spread much faster.

Fall allergy season lasts roughly 6 weeks, while most viral illnesses are resolved within 2 weeks. This can result in mild illnesses going without treatment if you suspect you may be suffering from allergies instead of a viral infection. This can result in your illness being spread accidentally.

How to Manage Allergy Symptoms

Fall allergies can bring a variety of pesky symptoms which can last weeks, or as long as you are exposed to the allergens. The easiest way to see whether you’re suffering from allergies or an illness would be to take an over the counter antihistamine to see if it resolves your symptoms. Speak to your healthcare provider about whether your symptoms could be allergies to see which medications are best for your particular needs.

You can also prevent allergy symptoms from taking over by limiting your time in areas with large amounts of fallen leaves. Trekking over dead leaves will allow the mold spores to stick to your clothing and shoes and could bring them into the house. Removing your shoes outside and changing once you get home can help limit exposure.
