Do I Need to Get a Flu Shot This Year?- AFC Urgent Care

The CDC recommends that you get a flu shot every year, but this year, the pandemic makes getting one even more important!

Getting your flu shot is an important step in being as vigilant as possible in order to avoid what doctors are referencing as a “twindemic” of the flu and COVID-19. If you have questions about whether to get a flu shot this year and how it can help, your AFC Urgent Care Monroe Rd. team has all the details.

Who Needs to Get a Flu Shot?

The CDC recommends that nearly everyone above the age of 6 months should get a flu shot every year.

Certain groups are at higher risk, which means they should definitely get the flu vaccine—adults over 65 years old, those with underlying illnesses like asthma or heart disease and pregnant women.

Other Ways to Avoid Illness

  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds.
  • Frequently sanitize highly trafficked areas in your home.
  • Wear a mask when out in public.
  • Remain six feet apart from others outside the home.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

When Should I Get the Flu Shot?

The CDC recommends that you receive your annual flu shot each year by the end of October. This allows your body to build up antibodies against the flu after you’ve received the vaccine, a process that takes around two weeks.

Wondering whether it’s ever “too early” to get your flu shot? Experts recommend waiting until mid-September each year if you’re in a high risk category and until at least September for everyone else.

Benefits of the Flu Shot

  • Less likely to contract the flu
  • Can save healthcare resources for the care of patients with COVID-19
  • Helps protect women during and after pregnancy
  • Lessens the length and severity of the flu if you do end up with the flu
