What Should I Do If I Get the Flu?- AFC Urgent Care

Up to 20% of Americans get the flu each year. While no one wants to get the flu, it’s an unfortunate reality.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Pineville wants you to know the symptoms to watch out for when it comes to the flu, as well as what you can do to treat the flu and recover as quickly as possible!

How Do You Catch the Flu?

The flu is an extremely contagious viral infection that affects your upper respiratory system. Most cases of the flu are caught by being around another person who had the virus.

Since the flu virus can live on doorknobs and smartphones for hours, it can be easy to spread the virus, especially when people do not cover their nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.

Flu Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Body aches
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

How Long Does the Flu Last?

The flu can last roughly one to two weeks, depending on the severity of symptoms. While the severe symptoms subside within two to three days, other flu symptoms like a dry cough and fatigue can last around seven days.

If you believe you have the flu, seek medical attention. Your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication to shorten the duration and intensity of your illness.

Flu Treatment

  • Take antiviral medication, if prescribed.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Use a humidifier.
  • Try lozenges to soothe your throat.
  • Take OTC medication to help with pain and fever.

Our mission at AFC Urgent Care Pineville is to provide affordable, high-quality health care to those in our area!
