Halloween Safety Guide: Tips for Preventing Injuries

A group of trick-or-treaters gets candy on Halloween.

Halloween is a time for costumes, trick-or-treating, fall activities, and plenty of fun for the whole family at Indian Trail’s Halloween Spooktacular event. However, Halloween also brings an increased risk of common injuries, including falls, cuts, burns, and other accidents. Each year, thousands of people seek emergency medical care for Halloween-related injuries. Many of these injuries, fortunately, can be prevented with a few simple precautions.

If an unexpected injury does occur, your local AFC Urgent Care in Indian Trail, NC, can provide convenient care. Our clinic welcomes walk-ins on Halloween and throughout the week, with extended hours to ensure getting medical attention is convenient.

How to Choose a Safe Halloween Costume

When selecting a Halloween costume, safety is not always the first thing that comes to mind. Most people focus on finding something funny, creative, trendy, or entertaining. However, a costume should also allow you to move comfortably and safely.

When choosing your Halloween Costume, consider these precautions and reminders from the National Safety Council:

  • Choose properly fitting costumes and shoes. Avoid costumes with long trains, oversized sleeves, or excessive fabric that could cause you to trip. Because many costumes, wigs, and accessories are not fire-resistant, keep them away from candles and other sources of heat. When possible, choose costumes labeled as flame-resistant.
  • Make children visible at night. Many Halloween costumes feature dark colors, which can make children difficult for drivers to see. Add reflective tape to costumes, shoes, bags, or candy buckets. Glow sticks and other light-up accessories, such as glow-in-the dark candy buckets, can also help children remain visible while walking through neighborhoods.
  • Limit the use of masks. Masks can obstruct a child’s vision and increase the risk of trips and falls. Nontoxic Halloween makeup can be a safer alternative, but always test makeup on a small area of skin first to check for irritation. Makeup should also be completely removed before bedtime to reduce the risk of skin or eye irritation.

If Halloween makeup causes a rash, irritation, or other skin concern, AFC Urgent Care Indian Trail can evaluate and treat many dermatology issues. Our medical providers can determine the appropriate treatment for relief and recommend follow-up with a dermatologist when necessary.

Stay Safe While Trick-or-Treating

Visibility is one of the most important safety considerations when trick-or-treating, as pedestrian fatality risk is 43% higher on Halloween night compared with other comparable evenings. In addition to adding reflective materials to costumes, consider giving each child a flashlight, glow stick, or another light source. Staying together in a group can also make trick-or-treaters easier for drivers to see.

Remember basic pedestrian safety rules throughout the evening:

  • Use sidewalks whenever they are available.
  • If there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic.
  • Cross streets at designated crosswalks whenever possible.
  • Follow traffic signals and pedestrian signs.
  • Before crossing, make sure approaching vehicles have stopped and the driver is aware of you.
  • Remind children to watch where they are walking and avoid distractions from phones or other devices.

Halloween Candy Safety

With Halloween ranking first in total candy sales among all holidays, it’s no surprise that families bring home plenty of treats each year. Before children start enjoying their candy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends taking a few precautions:

  • Only accept properly wrapped treats. Remind children not to eat candy or other food that is not commercially packaged and sealed.
  • Wait until you get home to eat candy. Neighborhoods can be dark and distracting on Halloween, making it difficult to inspect candy properly while trick-or-treating. Waiting until you are home allows you to examine items under better lighting.
  • Check for signs of tampering. Look for unusual discoloration, an abnormal appearance, tears in wrappers, or small holes. Discard anything that appears damaged or suspicious.
  • Have a snack before heading out. Offering children a meal or snack before trick-or-treating can help keep them from becoming overly hungry and wanting to eat candy while they’re still out.

Make Your Home Safe for Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween decorations can also create safety hazards around the home. From 2020 through 2024, Halloween decorations were responsible for an estimated 835 home structure fires each year. Nearly half of these fires occurred because decorations were placed too close to a heat source, including candles or hot equipment.

When decorating your home, keep decorations, costumes, and other flammable materials away from open flames and other sources of heat. You may also want to use LED candles instead of traditional candles to reduce the risk of a fire.

A few additional steps can make your home safer for your family and visiting trick-or-treaters:

  • Park vehicles in the driveway whenever possible. Keeping cars off the street helps provide more room for pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Keep exits and pathways clear. Decorations should never block doors, windows, or other emergency exits. Check that smoke alarms are functioning properly before Halloween.
  • Light your front yard and walkway. Adequate lighting helps trick-or-treaters safely find their way to your door.
  • Clear leaves and debris from walkways. Wet or slippery leaves can create a significant trip-and-fall hazard, particularly for children wearing costumes that may restrict their movement.
  • Keep pets safely indoors. Frequent doorbell ringing and unfamiliar costumes can frighten even normally calm pets. Keeping them away from trick-or-treaters can help prevent unexpected reactions or injuries.

If a Halloween decoration or candle causes a minor burn, medical care is available without a trip to the Emergency Room at AFC Urgent Care Indian Trail. Our team of medical providers can evaluate minor burns, provide appropriate treatment, and offer guidance to help reduce discomfort and support proper healing.
