Does Screen Time Affect Your Eyesight?

Do you spend a lot of time in front of the computer screen? Believe it or not, you could be affecting your eyes in a negative way.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care of Pineville wants to share some ways you can protect your eyes from all that time in front of a screen—and boost your vision and eye health.

What Does Too Much Screen Time Do to the Eyes?

Nowadays, many of us seem to have our eyes focused on our smartphones or computer screens throughout the day. However, while technology is our friend, it can also be our enemy in a lot of ways if we are not careful, starting with its effects on our eyes.

Looking at the screen for too long can cause a number of issues, including computer vision syndrome and dry eyes. When you’re sitting in front of a computer, be sure to look up at least every 20 minutes for 20 seconds and stare at something at least 20 feet away.

Other Ways to Boost Your Eye Health

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Manage chronic conditions, including diabetes and hypertension.
  • Wear protective eyewear.
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection when outside.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Following proper contact lens care protocols.

Can the Foods We Eat Affect Our Vision?

You have probably always heard growing up about how carrots can help improve your eyesight, which is true. Because carrots are packed with vitamin A, which is the vitamin that helps promote eye health, they are the perfect food for your eyes.

But carrots aren’t the only eye health boosters! There are plenty of other foods to fill your plate with.

Foods That Benefit Your Eyes

  • Fatty fish
  • Nuts
  • Legumes
  • Seeds
  • Citrus fruits
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Beef
