Can I Have Strep Throat Without a Fever?

"

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 11,000 to 13,000 cases of strep throat are diagnosed among Americans in a given year. And while you might think a fever is a logical symptom of strep throat, not having one doesn’t mean you’re free and clear of strep.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Pineville wants you to know what signs to watch for when it comes to strep throat, as well as how you can treat strep throat as quickly as possible, should you be diagnosed with the infection this year.

What Is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils caused by group A streptococcus. This type of bacteria is responsible for as many as one-third of all sore throats.

While some cases of strep throat can resolve on their own without intervention, in most cases the condition requires treatment with an antibiotic. If you begin exhibiting the symptoms outlined below, seek medical care, since the strep bacteria can also lead to more serious medical conditions.

Symptoms of Strep Throat

  • Throat pain that comes on quickly
  • Painful swallowing
  • Red and swollen tonsils
  • White patches
  • Streaks of pus
  • Tiny red spots on roof of the mouth
  • Swollen, tender lymph nodes
  • Fever

Who Is at Risk for Strep Throat?

That’s a bit of a trick question. Anyone can experience strep throat. However, the condition is most common among children between the ages of 5 and 15.

Because they’re around young children, parents with school-age children are also at a higher risk than others of developing strep throat.

Treatment of Strep Throat

  • Take an antibiotic, as prescribed.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat soothing foods.
  • Gargle with warm salt water.
  • Use a humidifier.
  • Stay away from irritants.
