What is the Second Chance Act?
The Heart of Student Safety Florida’s Second Chance Act (SB 1070) was established to protect our young athletes from undiagnosed heart conditions. Named in honor of athletes who lost their lives to sudden cardiac arrest, this law now requires all high school students (grades 9-12) to receive at least one electrocardiogram (ECG) screening before participating in interscholastic sports.
At AFC Urgent Care, we believe every athlete deserves a "second chance" at life through early detection. We’ve updated our sports physical protocols to ensure your child is compliant with state laws and, more importantly, safe on the field.
Why AFC Urgent Care for Your Sports Physical?
Expert Care on Your Schedule A standard physical only catches about 10% of hidden heart issues. By adding an ECG, that detection rate jumps significantly. AFC Urgent Care makes this process seamless for Florida families:
- Comprehensive Screenings: We provide both the standard FHSAA physical and the required ECG in one visit.
- No Appointment Needed: We know your schedule is busy. Just walk in during our extended evening or weekend hours.
- Affordable Pricing: In the spirit of the Act, we offer low-cost ECG options to ensure every student has access to life-saving screenings.
- Board-Certified Providers: Your child will be seen by experienced clinicians who specialize in pediatric and adolescent care.
What to Expect During the Visit
Quick, Painless, and Vital The ECG is a non-invasive test that takes only a few minutes. We place small sensors on the chest to record the heart’s electrical activity.
- Check-In: Provide your school’s required FHSAA forms.
- The Physical: A thorough check of vitals, joints, and overall health.
- The ECG: A quick, painless heart screening.
- Instant Results: We provide the documentation you need for school athletic departments before you leave.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child need an ECG every year?
Under the Second Chance Act, students must complete at least one ECG screening during their high school career (grades 9-12). However, some school districts or specific health histories may require more frequent testing.
What if the ECG shows an abnormality?
If an irregularity is detected, our providers will guide you on the next steps, which typically include a referral to a pediatric cardiologist for a more in-depth evaluation before sports clearance is granted.
Can I use an ECG from a previous year?
The law allows for ECGs performed within two years prior to the start of the 2026 school year to count toward the requirement. Bring your records, and we can help verify your status.
