Why Are So Many Worried About the COVID-19 Omicron Variant?

December 13, 2021

Public health officials and the people are concerned over the latest strain of COVID-19, the Omicron variant, which was recently discovered in South Africa. We know that viruses mutate to become stronger as populations develop resistance. So why are so many people worried about the COVID-19 Omicron variant?

World health leaders are concerned that the Omicron variant could result in a wave of illness across the globe.

Researchers are working hard to learn more about the Omicron variant. Early studies are showing that this mutation is significantly different than previous strains. There is also concerning data that reveals the virus may spread faster and be more resilient than previous strains.

Differences in the Omicron Variant

The mutations that have occurred in the Omicron variant are significantly different that previous strains of the virus. Omicron has over 50 different mutations from the delta variant. What is particularly concerning about this is that 30 of these mutations are found in the spike protein of the coronavirus. This is the part of the virus that the COVID-19 vaccine has taught the body to fight.

Accelerated Transmission

The Omicron variant is spreading at a faster rate than any previous strain of COVID-19. Experts fear that this alarming rate could overburden healthcare systems, resulting in many patients left untreated.

Increased Resistance

The new Omicron variant has mutated to be more resistant to vaccination. This increases the risk that even vaccinated people can potentially contract the virus. People who suffered from earlier strains of the virus are also capable of contracting the Omicron variant.

Children who have contracted the new omicron variant are also at an increased risk of hospitalization than they were with previous strains.

Experts do reveal that those who are vaccinated are still less likely to suffer from severe illness and complications.

Delta Variant is Still Thriving

In the United States, the Delta variant is still the predominant illness, infecting thousands of patients every day. This, in addition to the new Omicron variant, puts the public at an increased risk of contracting the potentially deadly virus.

COVID-19 Symptoms Include:

Patients who are experiencing any of the symptoms of COVID-19 should get tested immediately to help stop the spread of the virus.
