What is the novel coronavirus?

The novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is an upper respiratory infection quickly spreading worldwide, with 427 positive cases identified in New Jersey. COVID-19 is a previously unseen virus, so much is unknown about it at this time including a vaccination. The virus is spread through direct contact with people, surfaces or objects that have been infected with it.

Symptoms of COVID-19

COVID-19 shares many of its symptoms with the flu, which is a common and weakened version of a coronavirus. If you begin to develop any of the following symptoms, you should contact a doctor immediately for assessment and to determine if you should undergo testing for COVID-19:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Dry cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Congestion
  • Sore throat

The novel coronavirus has an incubation period of up to fourteen days after initial exposure. While symptoms often begin to appear after about a week, many cases do not present with symptoms at all. Cases that are asymptomatic can still be highly contagious. High-risk patients, including senior citizens and patients with compromised immune systems, may exhibit symptoms more severely and develop complications as a result of the coronavirus.

How you can prevent COVID-19

The novel coronavirus is spread through direct contact with infected patients and surfaces and through community spread. In order to protect yourself and your family, follow these steps:

  • Take the time to wash your hands frequently throughout the day, especially after using the restroom, handling a dirty diaper and before and after handling food. Use antibacterial soap and warm water and scrub for at least 20 seconds to kill germs. If soap or water are unavailable, hand sanitizer can be used to remove germs. However, it will not be able to remove buildup on your hands from dirt you collect throughout the day.
  • Clean your most commonly used surface and objects at least once throughout the day, including electronics. Germs can stay alive longer on objects and surfaces than on your hands, which are often in motion and transmit germs from your skin to your laptop, keyboard or desk. Use disinfectant wipes or cleaning products that are approved for electronics without damage.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes or mouth, with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you have to sneeze or cough.
  • Follow local guidelines. Staying home and flattening the curve is currently the most effective thing you can do to avoid contracting COVID-19. Limit your trips to the grocery store if possible. If you require medical treatment, visit AFC Urgent Care Cedar Grove.
