Will My Scoliosis Get Worse?

If you know that you have scoliosis, you were probably told at a younger age during an annual screening.

Your spine is constructed out of interlocking vertebrae that support your body and promote movement. When your spine has scoliosis, the vertebrae take on an “S” or “C” shape instead of a vertical line.

Most cases of scoliosis are mild and don’t require intensive intervention. Care is focused on symptom management and routine screening to watch for any progression.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Athens, TN can help you better understand your scoliosis below!

What Is the Best Way to Diagnose Scoliosis?

In addition to obtaining a full family history, your doctor will most likely want to get detailed images of your spine and the curve. An X-ray is usually the first diagnostic tool used to measure the degree of the curvature. An MRI or a CT scan may also be ordered if your case isn’t as easily identifiable with an X-ray.

Early detection is important to help support your spine and incorporate symptom management strategies. If you are still growing, your scoliosis could worsen over time so it is important to keep an eye on any changes.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

  • Difference in shoulder height
  • Asymmetry in ribs
  • Difference in hip or shoulder blade height
  • Prominence on one side of the back when bending over

Can Scoliosis Be Treated?

The majority of scoliosis cases aren’t actually medically treated right away. Many doctors will simply incorporate more office visits and checkups to keep an eye on the curve. Sometimes the curve won’t get any worse or will straighten as you grow, and other cases will slowly rotate more over time.

If your curve is between 20 and 50 degrees, a brace may be suggested to help reverse some of the curve. If your case is severe enough, surgery may be discussed to obtain a higher quality of life.

Managing Scoliosis Symptoms

  • Consistent exercise to strengthen your back muscles
  • Anti-inflammatories to manage pain
  • Yoga and stretching to help alleviate pressure points on your back
