Why Is Asthma Worse in the Fall?

Asthma symptoms are only triggered during the spring and summer season when the humidity is at its highest, right? Not necessarily.

Because viruses account for 80% of asthma attacks, the fall season can actually bring about a high number of asthma symptoms among Americans. That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care of Athens wants to share some tips on keeping asthma symptoms at bay this fall.

Can You Exercise If You Have Asthma?

Exercise is recommended for us all, even those who have been diagnosed with asthma. But with that said, exercise can sometimes trigger asthma attacks.

Fortunately, people who have asthma are able to exercise, as long as they have the tools needed to help alleviate and prevent symptoms.

Ways to Prevent Exercise-Induced Asthma

  • Use pre-exercise inhaled drugs before exercise, if prescribed.
  • Warm up and cool down before and after exercising.
  • Wear a mask or scarf over nose and mouth when the weather is cold and you are exercising outdoors.
  • Steer clear of time outdoors when you can see your breath, which can irritate the lungs.

Is Asthma Only Diagnosed in Kids?

Believe it or not, asthma can appear at any time during a person’s life, as stated by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Although many people are diagnosed with asthma at an earlier age, for some people, asthma develops later in life. When asthma occurs in a person in adulthood, it is usually diagnosed as adult onset asthma. Regardless of when your asthma is diagnosed, there are steps you can take to help prevent attacks.

Asthma Prevention Tips

  • Use your air conditioner instead of opening windows.
  • Decontaminate your decor.
  • Maintain humidity levels.
  • Prevent mold spores.
  • Reduce pet dander.
  • Clean regularly.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when it’s cold outside.
