How Can I Lower My Risk of Stroke?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that around 795,000 Americans suffer a stroke each year. Although there are some risk factors you cannot control, including your age and family medical history, there are some things you can do to help reduce your risk of having a stroke.

During American Stroke Awareness Month this May, our team at AFC Urgent Care Athens, TN wants to share some insight into what you can do to reduce your risk of experiencing a stroke.

What Are the Risk Factors for Stroke?

Although anyone can experience a stroke, there are some factors that can put you at a higher risk. For instance, if you are living with high blood pressure, you might be at a higher risk.

Smoking, having high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, living with diabetes and having a medical condition that causes inflammation can also put you at a higher risk for stroke. But there are steps you can take to lower your risk.

Ways to Prevent a Stroke

  • Lower your blood pressure, if needed.
  • Lose weight, if needed.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Drink only in moderation.
  • Take steps to manage conditions like atrial fibrillation or diabetes.
  • Quit smoking.

How Can your Diet Help to Reduce Your Risk of Stroke?

We mentioned that excess weight and high cholesterol are two risk factors for stroke. Your diet can help you mitigate both.

When you’re eating a diet that’s high in fat, sugar and sodium, your health is at risk. So, fill your plate with healthy foods, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy.
