Don’t let autumn injuries & illnesses sneak up on you. Prepare for the upcoming seasonal change with AFC Athens – we’re open daily.
Swimmer’s ear, sunburn, heatstroke and weird insect bites are common summer ailments. So, the changing of the season means less injuries and illnesses, right? Not quite. Autumn is an exciting time of the year filled with family trips to Mayfield Farm Park and cozy conversations around the campfire.
While there may be no more heat-related illnesses, here’s our list of five medical issues that occur, specifically in the fall.
1. Sprains, Strains and Fractures
With temperatures dropping in Southeast Tennessee, it’s time to start on some yard work or that long awaited home improvement project. Physical movement such as lifting, bending or raking can place extra stress on the muscles and joints. As a result, sprains (ligament injuries), strains (muscle or tendon injuries) and fractures (a cracked or broken bone) are still common issues in the fall.
These types of injuries are also brought on by slipping or falling. Wet leaves, uneven ground hidden by leaves and early onset darkness are the main reasons patients might slip or fall in autumn. To avoid and prevent slips and falls, keep walkways clear of debris (including those colorful leaves), wear supportive shoes – especially when outdoors, and use flashlights or other sources of light in the dark.
If you’re trimming branches outside or doing some home renovation, practice proper lifting techniques and take breaks during repetitive tasks. This will help reduce the stress on your muscles.
If you think you may have sustained a sprain, strain or fracture we highly recommend seeing an AFC provider. We can help evaluate your condition and if needed perform a digital X-ray.
2. Shoulder and Knee Injuries
Shoulder and knee injuries deserve a category unto themselves. These types of injuries are caused by overuse or sudden, awkward movements when participating in physical activities such as sports, hiking or even household chores. Constant overhead motion could create tendonitis, rotator cuff strains or instability in your shoulders. Whereas the knees are more susceptible to meniscus tears, ligament injuries and tendonitis because they bear much of your body’s weight.
To help prevent shoulder and knee injuries, warm up before physical activities and be mindful of overuse. Long-term issues or persistent pain may need to be treated with professional care. To learn more about orthopedic care at AFC Athens, click here.
3. Bee and Wasp Stings
Often thought of as spring or summer concerns, bee and wasp stings are also common issues we see in the fall. Bees and wasps face a decrease in their food sources in autumn. Their lack of food makes them more desperate, and they resort to eating sugary foods. So that sugary drink or treat you’re enjoying outside might actually be drawing nearby wasps to you.
Another reason bees and wasps become more irritated and aggressive in the fall is because their life cycle is nearing its end. Besides the Queen, many bees and wasps will die during the winter, so they have nothing to loose – they’ll attack without hesitation.
If stung, monitor your symptoms and seek medical care when the pain is more than mild discomfort. For severe allergic reactions (like anaphylaxis), seek immediate attention at the closest emergency room.
To lower your chances of getting stung be aware of your surroundings outside, especially by trashcans or when consuming sugary drinks or food.
4. Burns from Campfires and Bonfires
Fall staples always include campfires and bonfires. But because of all that s’more making, we see a lot of burns, eye injuries and other fire-related injuries. Other circumstances such as windy conditions, improper materials, and hidden embers contribute to these types of injuries.
Practice fire safety, use non-treated wood, keep a fire-extinguisher handy and always monitor the fire until it’s fully out. However, if you do sustain a burn treat it promptly and visit AFC Athens for our dermatology services or check into the ER for severe burns.
5. Seasonal Allergies
And last, but certainly not least, one of the most common reasons patients check into AFC Athens is because of their seasonal allergies. Whether it’s ragweed, mold from damp leaves or dust from your household chores, allergy symptoms can be brutal in the fall.
You might be suffering from seasonal allergies if you experience the following: sneezing, itchy eyes, nasal congestion and coughing. For some, allergies can be so severe they lead to sinus infections.
For relief, limit outdoor exposure on high pollen days, shower after spending time outside (this helps remove pollen from skin and hair), keep windows closed (this reduces allergens inside the home) and consider utilizing a HEPA air filter to minimize indoor triggers.
If needed allergies can also be medicated. Over-the-counter options like antihistamines, decongestants or nasal sprays are generally used. However, our clinic also offers allergy treatments for a stronger and longer-lasting option.
