AFC Urgent Care Worcester administers flu shots to walk-in patients seven days a week to prepare for flu season starting in September. The flu virus is highly contagious and common, with a season running from early fall through late spring. Anyone can get the flu, at any age. In order to prevent contracting the flu as the season goes on, the Centers for Disease Control recommends that most people over the age of six months get a flu vaccine, which provides immunity against the current active strain of the virus.
Symptoms of the influenza virus include:
Severity of symptoms can vary between cases and it’s important to monitor your symptoms. Those who are at high-risk of complications may experience the worst symptoms, and could require hospitalization.
Anyone over six months of age should receive a flu shot. If you have an egg allergy, or have had allergic reactions to the flu shot in the past, our trained physicians will tell you the best treatment. If you are at risk of developing complications from the flu, you should get the flu shot as soon as it is available in September. Those who are high-risk can include:
The flu shot is typically effective for about six months, or the duration of one flu season. Because the virus evolves each year, it is critical to get an updated vaccine each year.
Getting a flu shot will not only protect you from the flu, but it will protect those around you. If you do catch the flu even after getting a shot, your symptoms will be significantly less.

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as AFC is an excellent alternative.
