What We Treat: Dehydration

Dehydration is easily recognizable during the summer. It often accompanies over-exhaustion and overheating, which are frequently triggered by the hot summer temperatures. Dehydration isn’t just a summer affliction, however.

Each winter, people die as a result of dehydration – often because they failed to recognize the symptoms. The dry winter air rapidly dehydrates us while our bodies tirelessly work to keep ourselves warm. This means if we’re outside shoveling snow, our bodies are working twice as hard, as it’s using energy to both shovel snow and prevent us from developing hypothermia. This is why it is vital that we carry water with us at all times when we’re doing any kind of winter activity, whether it be skiing, shoveling snow or playing hockey.

Dehydration’s symptoms include:

  • Fluctuating body temperatures
  • High fever
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Intense headache
  • Light-headedness
  • Dry mouth
  • Extreme thirst
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Rapid, hollow breathing

If you believe you’re experiencing dehydration symptoms, it’s imperative that you do not operate a vehicle. Dehydration majorly impairs motor functions, making dehydrated drivers a serious danger on the road. Have somebody drive you over to AFC Urgent Care Watertown, where one of our physicians will first diagnose your dehydration and then promptly treat it. If necessary, we can administer re-hydration fluids to expedite the healing process.

Walk in to our facility any day of the week – with no appointment necessary! If you wish to speak with one of our medical professionals, call us at 617.923.2273. We look forward to helping you surmount the perils of winter!
