Dispelling Common Health Myths for Patients

It seems like everywhere you look you’re bombarded with health info. From TV shows and magazine covers to friends and family who want to share their wisdom, there’s no shortage of health myths being thrown out there each day. Today we’re going to dispel some of the most common health myths that you probably hear all the time!

Your Body Needs to Detox

Many celebrities and normal people alike talk about detoxing their system. These detoxes typically include things like all liquid diets, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper.

While the thought of removing all the toxins from your body may sound nice, a detox isn’t necessary. Your liver and kidneys work hard to filter everything in your body, removing toxins along the way. Those organs can do their job just fine without the addition of a liquid detox diet!

You Can Target Weight loss

If you have a problem area of your body that you want to lose fat from, unfortunately it may not be as simple as it sounds. For instance, doing sit ups will strengthen your core, but don’t expect to see a six pack anytime soon.

By focusing on a healthy diet and regular exercise you can encourage fat loss throughout your body, but targeted fat loss is impossible.

Cold Weather Causes Colds

At some point in your childhood you were likely told to put a hat on so you didn’t catch a cold. While it may have been to cold to leave without a hat, the reasoning you heard was completely false.

Many people claim that cold and wet weather causes illness, but the only thing that can actually cause an illness is bacteria or viruses.

Thin = Healthy

Society tends to look at thin people as an image of a healthy person, but that isn’t always true. One the other hand, fat does not always mean unhealthy. You should focus on maintaining a healthy diet and exercise plan before focusing on the number on the scale.

You may lose some weight with your new healthy lifestyle, but that doesn’t have to be the goal!

This only scratches the surface of the health myths that are repeated each day. Be sure to consult with your physician before believing health advice or claims from uninformed individuals. Listening to health myths is not only a waste of time, but a real health risk too!
