What Can You Do If the Flu Hits Your Home?

This winter, and possibly in the late springtime, you’ve probably experienced or seen other patients with a case of influenza, or the flu. Currently, the virus is still one one of the leading causes of seasonal illness in Warrington as well as the U.S.

In fact, the Centers for Disease Control estimate that upwards of 11% of the entire U.S population get sick each year. Additionally, this year’s flu season is expected to be much longer than that of previous. That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Warrington wants to share some information about the flu and what to do if you think you have it.

How Long Will Does the Flu Last?

When you start experiencing the symptoms of the flu, it can seem as though the virus is going to last forever. But the CDC states that the flu virus usually lasts from three to seven days in most cases. But it could last even longer if certain strains of influenza A or B are particularly virulent.

Each year, the influenza virus adapts and changes which means that symptoms can become progressively worsened due to a more intense viral infection. Some symptoms, like fatigue, may linger for a bit longer as your body recovers.

Symptoms of the Flu

Many patients are familiar with flu symptoms and their normal duration. However, flu symptoms can arise nearly 5 days after an infection and last for over two weeks. The most common flu symptoms that patients will likely have include the following:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny
  • Stuffy nose
  • Muscle
  • Body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

Can You Prevent the Flu?

Your best method of prevention is the annual flu shot. While the CDC recommends being vaccinated each year by the end of October, if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet this year, it isn’t too late.

In addition to the flu shot, you want to make sure you are washing your hands on a regular basis, disinfecting commonly touched surfaces, and avoiding contact with those who are sick. Hygiene, flu vaccines, and active prevention are the most effective tools to prevent the flu virus.

Treatment for the Flu

At-home remedies are successful in treating initial flu symptoms. A list of some at-home remedies to get started include the following.

  • Take an antiviral medication, if prescribed.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Get lots of bed rest.
  • Try throat lozenges.
  • Use decongestant and cough medicine to help ease symptoms.

In addition, make sure you follow up treatment for lingering or more intense flu symptoms at a local urgent care center! Do you think you might be experiencing symptoms of the flu? Stop by AFC Urgent Care Warrington today!
