Safe, Low Risk Thanksgiving Recipes and Activities for 2020

November 22, 2020

2020 has been an unusual year to say the least. It would be naïve to expect things to go back to normal just because Thanksgiving is approaching, so it’s necessary to come up with alternate plans. Large celebrations put not just the people in attendance at risk, but also every person those people may come into contact with for 2 weeks following the celebration. When you think about it, that’s a huge number of people at risk! Even if everyone says they feel fine, all it takes is one asymptomatic person to create a super spread of covid-19. Instead of taking that risk, consider utilizing some of these safer options to celebrate the holiday!

Cutting Down Portions

Health experts are urging people to limit their celebrations to those that they live with or see on a regular basis. This likely means that preparing a typical sized thanksgiving feast is unnecessary. Instead, take this as an opportunity to explore new recipes and smaller portions! Try a turkey breast or turkey legs instead of a whole turkey. Make seasonal sides using fresh ingredients like squash and Brussel sprouts, rather than large casseroles. If you have kids, this is a great time to let them get creative in the kitchen without worrying about them messing up a big holiday dinner!

Virtual Celebrations

Celebrating virtually with family members and friends who live far away or are considered high-risk is a great way to feel together even when you’re apart. You can listen to music, play games, or even watch a movie together virtually! Enjoy your own home cooked, smaller portioned meals and catchup the same way that you would at a traditional holiday gathering.

Delivering Meals to Family

If you have grandparents or other high-risk family members that you’re worried about this holiday season, delivering a plate of home cooked food to them is a great way to show how much you care while still keeping them safe. If you don’t live close to them, there may be community programs available to deliver a hot holiday meal to their door!

If you think you may have covid-19 or the flu, visit a nearby urgent care center right away to get tested and begin treatment. Remember to continue socially distancing, wear a mask, wash your hands, and stay positive as we wait for this to pass!
