Combat your Seasonal Depression this Winter

November 18, 2020
Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a disease that affects millions of people every winter season. People who live in northern parts of the world or in areas that do not get a lot of sun are more likely to be affected by seasonal depression. With 2020 almost behind us, there are a lot of thoughts looming through everyone’s head. AFC Urgent Care in Torrington is here to help with ways to combat this year’s seasonal depression.

Physical Treatment

It may be easier said than done, but getting active is one of the best ways to combat seasonal depression. Starting small with some walks around the neighborhood can make a world of difference. For best results, getting outside within the first two hours of waking up for just ten minutes can improve your mental health. Getting yourself into a daily routine can help you feel more in control of your surroundings. Adding a bit of exercise in the morning and then having a full breakfast will have you feel energized and ready for the day.

Mental Treatment

Light therapy has had proven results that help improve one’s mood during the winter season. 10 to 15 minutes of light therapy a day can mimic actual sunlight and help your brain release serotonin. Meditation is also an extremely effective way to reduce seasonal depression. This can also help your ability to focus and is not something that should only be done during the winter. Meditation has such positive effects on the brain; it should be done every day throughout the year.

Social Treatment

Depression can be triggered by allowing yourself to get into unhealthy habits that do not involve any social interaction. With COVID happening, it is more difficult to get out of the house and surround yourself with people you care about. To combat this, scheduling video calls with different people after work, going to socially distanced activities, or staying outside on nice days while interacting with others may all help improve your mood. Putting fun activities on your social calendar can help you find things to look forward to.  It’s important to be proactive and to get ahead of seasonal depression. Getting yourself into a healthy routine filled with some of the ideas above can help you feel good all winter. If you think your case needs more than the above, there are many resources available to help find the root of the problem.
