Flu Vaccinations

The flu virus can spread like wildfire through local communities, especially in tight quarters like offices, schools, dorms and even your own home. The virus affects the upper respiratory system, including the sinuses, nasal cavities and larynx, and symptoms can range from mild to more severe. Millions of cases are reported each year, with hundreds of thousands of cases resulting in hospitalizations and even deaths. While there are several steps that can be taken to prevent contracting the virus, the most effective method of prevention is by getting an annual flu shot. AFC Urgent Care Torrington administers flu shots on a walk-in basis to patients seven days a week.

What does the flu shot do?

The flu shot gives your body exposure to a diluted form of the current strain of the flu virus, allowing it to learn and recognize the virus and develop antibodies to fight against it as soon as you are exposed to a live case. The flu shot takes fourteen days to take effect due to the time it takes for antibodies to form. Because of the time it takes to become effective and give you immunity, it is recommended to get the flu shot early in the season between September and mid-October to avoid not having protection when the virus hits its peak.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Flu symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Chills
  • Chest and nasal congestion
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Head and muscle aches

Who should get a flu shot?

The flu shot is recommended for almost all patients over six months old, with exceptions being patients with egg allergies or have negatively reacted to a flu shot in the past. Patients who are considered high-risk for developing serious symptoms or complications from the virus, including senior citizens, pregnant women and immunocompromised patients should consult with their physician about the ideal time to get the flu shot.
