What Are Allergies?- AFC Urgent Care

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, more than 50 million people experience allergies every year, making them the sixth leading cause of chronic illness among Americans.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Sevierville wants to offer some tips on how you can tackle allergies this year in order to have a fun and relaxing summer!

Am I Suffering From Allergies or a Cold?

Cold and allergy symptoms can be very similar, making it difficult to tell which is which. In general, you’re likely experiencing allergies if they linger for several days to a week or if they seem to worsen in conjunction with exposure to known allergens, like pollen or mold.

Allergy Symptoms

  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Itchy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Rashes
  • Hives

Can My Allergies Be Prevented?

While you can’t totally eliminate allergies, you can take steps to make allergic reactions less likely. This is especially important if you’re experiencing seasonal allergies, which are affected by pollen levels—something that’s outside of your control.

Ways to Alleviate Allergy Symptoms

  • Stay indoors if the pollen counts are high and you have seasonal allergies.
  • Wear a mask.
  • Take a shower after being outdoors.
  • Use a nasal spray or other OTC decongestant or antihistamine.
