What the DOT Physical Checks

Your examiner reviews your health history and checks that you meet FMCSA standards for safe driving, including:

  • Vision of at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without glasses or contacts
  • The ability to tell red, green and amber traffic signal colors apart
  • Hearing a forced whisper from 5 feet away, or passing a hearing test
  • Blood pressure, pulse and a urinalysis
  • A physical exam covering your heart, lungs, spine and more

Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea or heart disease do not always disqualify you, but you may need extra records or a shorter certification.
