July 4th 2021: Health and Safety Tips

July 1, 2021

School is over, New Britain! It’s time to kick back, relax, and have fun this summer. July is one of the hottest months of the year and many of us are outside enjoying barbecues, family friendly activities, the beach/pool and other events. As we try to plan accordingly,  it can often be hard to remember all of the July 4th 2021 health and safety tips for you and your family. Here's a list of health and safety tips that can help guide you to a hazard free holiday.

Health and Safety Tips this Fourth Of July

  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect against UV rays so you can enjoy the sun at the beach
  • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Seek shade or shelter from the sun if your event or trip involves being out in the sun for an extended period of time
  • Watch what you eat and how long it’s out in the sun; Make sure to cook food at proper temperatures to avoid foodborne illnesses.
  • Wash your hands when handling food
  • Refrigerate foods when needed and keep hot foods hot: invest in a cooler with ice to keep cold foods away from the heat
  • Never let children ignite fireworks or be in close proximity of a firework going off
  • Always have an adult supervising any firework related activities. Parents don’t realize that children suffer injuries from sparklers. They can burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees.
  • Keep a bucket of water or hose ready just in case of a fire or injury
  • If you get burned or injured while igniting a firework at an outdoor activity seek immediate medical attention

Know that by following these tips you and your family will be safer and you can reduce the chances of potential hazards ruining your holiday.

Again if you apply sunscreen with an SPF over 50,  know that it will help you reduce your chances of getting skin cancer. If you drink enough water you will avoid heat related illnesses and dehydration. Cooking foods at proper temperatures will avoid unwanted gastroenteritis and other foodborne related illnesses. Last, but not least, protecting your children and others from firework related injuries can avoid unwanted burns, cuts and other deformities.
