Does the Flu Affect Adults and Children Differently?

April 30, 2021

Who wants to be stuck at home with the flu this season? No one!

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Levittown wants you to know the symptoms to look for when it comes to the flu, as well as how to prevent the flu virus this season.

How Does the Flu Virus Differ in Adults and Children?

Influenza (flu) affects children differently than adults. In general, the flu affects kids—and older adults—more severely than adults.

In children, the fever associated with influenza is likely to be higher, on average, than an adult's fever. In addition, children more often experience symptoms related to the digestive system, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. But if your child experiences those symptoms without flu-related symptoms, it's more likely to be caused by a stomach bug.

Common Symptoms of the Flu

  • Fatigue
  • Sweats
  • Body aches
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Weakness

What Is the Best Way I Can Protect My Family From the Flu?

The flu vaccine is your best defense against the flu. Nearly everyone age 6 months and older should be vaccinated against the flu on an annual basis.

Other ways to protect your family from the flu include washing your hands regularly, disinfecting commonly touched surfaces, staying away from people who are ill, and boosting the immune system with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Some foods have an extra immune-boosting effect.

Good Immune-Boosting Foods

  • Broccoli
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Spinach
  • Yogurt
  • Almonds
  • Red bell peppers
  • Citrus fruits
