How Do You Know If You Have a Problem with Your Bladder?

April 29, 2021
November is Bladder Health Month. Many Americans face issues with their bladder, including overactive bladder and frequent urination. That's why our team at AFC Urgent Care Levittown wants to take a few minutes to talk through these common issues and their symptoms. What Is the Main Cause of an Overactive Bladder? There are a number of reasons a person might experience an overactive bladder. For instance, the main muscle of the urinary bladder wall, which is known as the detrusor muscle, could be experiencing spasms. Drinking too much liquid, taking certain medications and/or having bladder stones can also cause a person to have an overactive bladder. Symptoms of an Overactive Bladder
  • Awaken two or more times in the night to urinate
  • Feel a sudden urge to urinate that's difficult to control
  • Experience urge incontinence
  • Urinate frequently, usually eight or more times in 24 hours
What Causes Frequent Urination? While overactive bladder is a common reason behind needing to urinate frequently, it's not the only one. Did you know that frequent urination can actually develop as a habit? There are also other reasons behind frequent urination, such as kidney or ureter problems, diabetes, pregnancy or prostate gland problems. Fortunately, you can take steps to limit the urge to urinate frequently and promote better bladder health. Ways You Can Keep Your Bladder Healthy
  • Drink enough fluids, especially water.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Avoid constipation.
  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Do pelvic floor muscle exercises.
