What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

When you feel stressed, do you tend to have stomach issues that follow? What about after you eat spicy food? Irritable bowel syndrome can affect a number of us in many ways.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Levittown is here to help you recognize the symptoms of IBS, as well as things you can do to try and prevent it.

How Do I Know If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS, occurs when the large intestine is compromised.

While IBS can affect anyone, more females than males seem to be diagnosed with the condition. There are between 25 and 45 million Americans experiencing IBS, and approximately two in three of them are female.

Symptoms of IBS

  • Abdominal pain
  • Altered bowel habits
  • Increased gas
  • Bloating (distention)
  • Cramping
  • Food intolerance

What Can Trigger IBS?

Especially where food is concerned, there are a number of triggers that can cause your irritable bowel syndrome to act up. For instance, carbonated drinks and fried and/or fatty foods can cause IBS symptoms to occur.

In addition, stress and anxiety can also spell tummy trouble. Therefore, doing what you can to de-stress can help make symptoms of IBS less common.

How to Prevent IBS

  • Get more fiber into your diet.
  • Avoid triggers.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Eat at regular times.

Are you having tummy trouble? If it has been going on for a few days, be sure to stop by AFC Urgent Care Levittown for a medical evaluation.
