Playground Cuts or Something More?

From neighborhood playgrounds to backyard adventures, kids rarely stay still for long. And with all that energy comes the occasional tumble, scrape, or cut. While many of these injuries are minor, some need a closer look. Knowing when to handle it at home and when to head to AFC Gastonia can make all the difference in how your child heals.

Common Childhood Injuries

Most everyday falls lead to minor injuries like:

  • Scraped knees or elbows
  • Small cuts
  • Bruises or mild swelling

These can usually be treated at home with basic first aid, clean the wound, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover it with a bandage.

Signs a Cut Needs Medical Attention

Some injuries go beyond what a bandage can fix. You should consider visiting AFC Gastonia if your child’s cut:

  • Is deep, long, or has uneven edges
  • Won’t stop bleeding after 10 minutes of steady pressure
  • Contains dirt or debris that won’t come out
  • Is on the face, hands, or near a joint
  • Reopens after starting to heal
  • Shows signs of infection like redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage

These wounds may require stitches or additional care to heal properly and reduce scarring.

 When Are Stitches Needed?

Stitches or alternatives like medical glue or steri-strips help close deeper cuts, protect against infection, and support better healing.

Timing is important. Most cuts that need closure should be treated within a few hours, so don’t wait too long if you’re unsure.

What to Do Right Away

If your child gets hurt, take these steps first:

  • Apply gentle pressure to stop bleeding
  • Rinse the wound with clean water
  • Remove visible dirt if possible
  • Cover with a clean bandage

If you’re questioning the severity, it’s always safest to have it checked.
