Allergies or a Sinus Infection?

AFC provider and patient testing

As soon as the weather warms up, many people trade winter coats for tissues. Blooming trees and longer days are a welcome change, but for your sinuses? Not always. If you’re dealing with congestion, facial pressure, and constant throat clearing, it can be tough to tell whether pollen is the culprit or if a sinus infection is brewing.

The symptoms often overlap in the beginning, but the cause and the treatment can be very different. Knowing what you’re dealing with can help you recover faster. If you are wanting to discuss treatment, come by AFC Gastonia to speak with one of our AFC providers.

What Seasonal Allergies Tend to Feel Like

Spring allergies happen when your immune system reacts to pollen or other airborne triggers. That reaction causes inflammation in your nasal passages and leads to familiar (and frustrating) symptoms.

Common allergy signs include:

  • Clear, watery nasal drainage
  • Sneezing fits
  • Itchy eyes, nose, or throat
  • Stuffy nose
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Symptoms that flare up outdoors

One major giveaway? Itchiness. Sinus infections rarely cause itchy eyes or throat.

Allergies also do not cause fever, and symptoms can stick around for weeks as long as pollen levels remain high.

What Points to a Sinus Infection

A sinus infection (sinusitis) often develops after a cold or when prolonged congestion blocks normal sinus drainage. Trapped mucus creates pressure, discomfort, and sometimes bacterial growth.

Signs of a sinus infection may include:

  • Thick yellow or green nasal discharge
  • Facial pain or pressure (cheeks, forehead, around the eyes)
  • Headache
  • Upper tooth pain
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Symptoms lasting longer than 10 days

Unlike allergies, sinus infections often make you feel run-down overall — not just congested.

Another clue: If bending forward increases facial pressure, that’s more consistent with sinus inflammation.

Why the Difference Matters

Treating allergies with antibiotics won’t help. On the other hand, ignoring a developing sinus infection can prolong discomfort or lead to complications.

Accurate diagnosis ensures you receive the right approach, whether that’s allergy management, supportive care, or prescription treatment.

When to Seek Medical Care at AFC Gastonia

Consider getting evaluated if you experience:

  • Symptoms lasting more than 10 days
  • Fever with facial pain
  • Severe or worsening headache
  • Swelling around the eyes
  • Symptoms that initially improve, then worsen
  • Shortness of breath

These signs may indicate that your condition needs medical attention at AFC Gastonia  rather than home care alone.

Finding Relief Sooner

For allergies:

  • Use antihistamines or nasal sprays as directed
  • Limit outdoor exposure during high pollen counts
  • Shower and change clothes after being outside
  • Keep windows closed during peak pollen times

For sinus infections:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Use saline rinses
  • Try humidified air
  • Rest and monitor symptoms
  • Seek medical guidance if symptoms persist or intensify

Spring should mean fresh air, not constant sinus misery. If your congestion isn’t improving or you’re unsure what’s causing it, a quick medical evaluation from one of our AFC providers can help pinpoint the issue and get you back to breathing comfortably.
