That is the age-old question at this time of year! Staying healthy at any point in the year is important, but it’s especially important now when the holidays are arriving and there is so much fun to be had.

While you are busy preparing for your holiday parties and are running around buying gifts for your loved ones, you want to make sure you avoid coming into contact with a stubborn illness that could keep you from your fun plans.

While avoiding illness entirely is not possible, our AFC Urgent Care Cleveland team explains some simple things you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick during the holiday season below.

What Are Some Simple Ways to Avoid Infections?

Taking care of your body is going to continue to be the most reliable way of avoiding infections at this time of year. You will come into contact with a variety of germs during a typical day, but that doesn’t mean you will necessarily get sick. If you are getting enough sleep, eating well and exercising regularly, you have a better chance of your immune system fighting off the illness for you.

Prioritize washing your hands often with warm water and soap, and ensure you are getting between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each night. You should also limit how much time you spend in large crowds at this time of year. A single sneeze from an infected person could land you with a stubborn infection that lasts for days or even weeks.

Tips for a Healthy Holiday Season

  • Bundle up when it is cold outside.
  • Get your flu vaccine.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Wear your seatbelt while traveling.

Do I Need to Worry About Foodborne Illnesses?

With the increase in family-style meals and food spreads laid out in kitchens at this time of year, there is always the risk that you will contract a foodborne illness. The longer the food sits out, the higher the chance that bacteria has started to grow that can make you really sick.

Be sure to prepare any meat to its recommended temperature, and serve your food immediately after it is cooked through. Take the time to store leftovers properly and put things into the fridge right away. If any perishable food has been left out for more than two hours, it is always best to err on the side of caution and just throw it out.

  • Use designated cutting boards for raw meat and produce.
  • Wash hands before handling food.
  • Don’t cook for others when you aren’t feeling well.
