Pneumonia

March 24, 2014

Pneumonia, an infection of the lungs, can leave you very sick. You may experience symptoms including a cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. Symptoms can be mild to severe. Those already sick, babies, and seniors are more likely to experience severe pneumonia.

Diagnosis will require a physical examination by a doctor and may call for chest x-rays or blood tests. Pneumonia is treatable. Antibiotics may be used to treat bacterial pneumonia and prevent complications from viral pneumonia. As always, get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Consider a cough medicine to alleviate a cough. If necessary, your doctor can prescribe a strong cough medicine.

To prevent pneumonia, there is a vaccine. If you are prone to severe pneumonia, the vaccine is recommended. Pneumonia is common after the flu, cold, measles or chicken pox. Always make sure to wash hands frequently or used alcohol based hand sanitizer.
