Bronchitis

March 17, 2014

Bronchitis is a disease of the respiratory system. It is an inflammation of bronchial passages within the lungs. When this occurs, small airways within the lungs are shut off which causes the symptoms of coughing and breathlessness.

Bronchitis is classified as either acute bronchitis or chronic bronchitis. Acute is typically a week or so in duration. Chronic is a severe long term illness and will require frequent medical attention.

Bronchitis can be either viral or bacterial, but most of the time it is viral. Those who are smokers may find it difficult to recover from bronchitis. They may also be more prone to develop chronic bronchitis.

Bronchitis symtpoms include coughing, phlegm, and soreness in the chest along with feeling of breathlessness. Wheezing and tiredness may also occur.

If you have bronchitis, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and avoid smoke. Doctors may prescribe a bronchodilator or strong cough syrup.
