Pink Eye Treatment Clinic in Boiling Springs, SC

Pink eye, and known as conjunctivitis, is a common condition of the eye causing redness and irritation. It is caused by a virus or bacteria which comes into contact with the eye. Common symptoms are redness, itchiness and swelling. Thankfully, pink eye rarely affects vision and there are many treatments available.

What is Pink Eye?

Pink eye is an eye condition commonly caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is the inflammation or infection of the membrane (conjunctiva) that lines your eyelids and covers the white part (sclera) of your eyeballs. It is the inflammation of the small blood vessels in the eyes that leads to their reddish or pink appearance. Although pink eye can be irritating, it seldom affects one’s vision. Treatments will help ease the discomfort.

After signs and symptoms begin, pink eye can be highly contagious for as long as two weeks. It can be spread through direct or indirect contact with the eye secretions of an infected person. An early diagnosis and treatment can protect you from spreading pink eye.

Both viral and bacterial pink eye may affect one or both eyes, typically spreading from one to the other. Viral pink eye usually produces a watery discharge. Bacterial pink eye often produces a thicker, yellow-green discharge. Both viral and bacterial pink eye can be associated with colds or with symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as a sore throat.

Both adults and children can develop either of these types of pink eye. However, children are more at risk for developing bacterial pink eye than adults are.

If your pink eye infection is caused by bacteria, your doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops and the infection should go away within a few days. With the use of medication, you can expect signs and symptoms to improve within a few days. Follow your doctor’s instructions and use the antibiotics for the complete period prescribed to prevent recurrence of the infection.

For most cases of viral pink eye, there is no treatment. Instead, the virus needs time to run its course, which will take up to two or three weeks. Viral conjunctivitis often begins in one eye and within a few days infects the other eye. Your signs and symptoms should gradually clear on their own.

Do you need a prescription for Pink Eye?

While most cases of pink eye go away on their own, using medicated eye drops or ointment can expedite the process. At AFC Urgent Care Boiling Springs, we provide remedies for pink eye to help you or your child get back to health sooner!

Should I go to an Urgent Care for Pink Eye?

If you or your child have pink eye, urgent care is a good place to seek treatment. Before you go and while you are there, be sure to not touch your eyes and be conscientious of touching your face in order to limit the spread. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious, and can be transmitted very easily. At AFC Urgent Care Boiling Springs, we have solutions for pink eye to get your health back to normal as quickly as possible!
