Does My Child’s Cut Need Medical Care?

From afternoons at neighborhood parks to backyard games and playground adventures around Southwest Charlotte, kids rarely slow down for long. And with all that movement comes the occasional fall, scrape, or unexpected cut. Most are minor, but some injuries need a closer look. Knowing what you can handle at home and when it’s time to seek care can make those stressful moments feel a lot more manageable.

At AFC Southwest Charlotte, we’re here to help you make that call with confidence.

 Common Childhood Injuries

Everyday tumbles often lead to minor injuries like:

  • Scraped knees or elbows
  • Small cuts
  • Bruises or mild swelling

These can usually be treated at home with simple first aid: clean the area, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover with a bandage.

Signs a Cut Needs Medical Attention

Some injuries go beyond basic care. Visit AFC Southwest Charlotte if your child’s cut:

  • Is deep, long, or has uneven edges
  • Won’t stop bleeding after 10 minutes of steady pressure
  • Contains dirt or debris that can’t be removed
  • Is on the face, hands, or near a joint
  • Reopens after starting to heal
  • Shows signs of infection like redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage

These types of wounds may require stitches or additional treatment to heal properly and reduce scarring.

 When Are Stitches Needed?

Stitches or alternatives like medical glue or steri-strips help close deeper cuts, lower the risk of infection, and support proper healing.

Timing matters. Most wounds that need closure should be treated within a few hours, so it’s best not to wait if you’re unsure.

 What to Do Right Away

If your child gets hurt, start with these steps:

  • Apply gentle pressure to stop bleeding
  • Rinse the wound with clean water
  • Remove visible dirt if possible
  • Cover with a clean bandage

If you’re unsure about the severity, it’s always a good idea to have an AFC provider take a look.
