Winter is the time for falling temperatures, snow, and…people? The risk of accidental injury and broken bones from slips and falls drastically increases during winter as snow and rain freezes into slippery ice patches. People of all ages, genders, and physical capabilities can slip and fall, which often results in serious or fatal injury. The risk is even higher for children and the elderly.

• Stay Alert. Keep eyes open and vision clear in the winter. The easiest way to prevent winter falls is to watch for uneven surfaces, ice patches, and wet paths.

• Take Your Time. Walking through winter ice and snow can be very time consuming. Be sure to plan ahead and give yourself ample time to get where you’re going. The chance of falling increases when you rush.

• Change the Way You Walk. Never run or take large, wide steps when walking on ice or snow. Short, shuffling steps prevents slipping and sliding.

• Help Children and the Elderly. Children and the Elderly need special care when walking on ice or snow because injuries from falls can be more severe for them. Prevent accidents by helping them walk, shoveling and applying salt to sidewalks and stairs, and avoiding slippery paths when possible.
