Could I Have a Respiratory Infection?

Cough

It never fails. School starts—and sickness sets in. While sickness can range from sore throats to stomachaches, it can also come in the form of respiratory infections. Respiratory infections occur mostly in the fall and winter, especially when children are in school and more time is spent indoors. That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Cleveland wants to take some time now to talk you through the common symptoms of these infections.

What Is a Respiratory Infection?

A respiratory infection is a common viral infection that affects the nose, throat and airways. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults experience about two to three upper respiratory infections (or colds) a year on average.

Signs of a Respiratory Infection

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Hoarseness
  • Laryngitis
  • Nasal congestion
  • Pain in sinuses
  • Sinusitis
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing

How Long Does a Respiratory Infection Last?

A respiratory infection can last anywhere from three to 14 days. However, if the symptoms of your respiratory infection last longer than 14 days, it’s important to seek medical attention to rule out other conditions such as sinusitis, allergies, pneumonia or bronchitis.

At-home Treatment for a Respiratory Infection

  • Try OTC pain relievers or cough medications.
  • Use a Neti pot or saline nasal spray.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Use throat lozenges or cough drops.
