Winter Health Myths

Every winter a lot of people get sick. AFC Urgent Care Bound Brook want to clear up some common health myths this winter season.

Being outside too long can get cause you to catch a cold

Despite its name, the common cold is not caused by cold weather. Colds are caused by viruses and bacteria. The reason they are so prominent in during cold months is because people are close together indoors where germs can spread easily.

Winter causes depression for many

This is not exactly true. While people with Seasonal Affective Disorder may experience depression symptoms, this is not the same as depression.

You lose most body heat through your head.

This was probably the product of moms who wanted their kids to wear hats. But in fact, you lose the same amount of body heat out of your head as you would with any other body part. Any body part that is exposed can release body heat, so while you should wear a hat, you should also wear a full jacket and pants as well to help combat escaped body heat.

You should never exercise in the cold

It is perfectly fine to exercise in the cold BUT make sure to warm up first. This also applies to winter sports.
