Why Does the Flu Cause Aches and Pains?

February 22, 2014

One of the clearest signs of the flu is sore joints and muscles. Can you tell the difference between aches and pains that are simply a result of the healing process and ones that should cause concern?

Use this guide for the cause and cure of body pain resulting from the flu.

What causes flu-related body aches?

White blood cells work to repair and rebuild muscle fibers that are damaged each day. When infected with the flu your immune system diverts these cells to fight off the virus, leaving your muscles stiff and in pain. In addition, muscles and joints become inflamed as white blood cells create the chemical cytokines to destroy infected cells.

When Should I Worry?

Red, swollen muscles and joints or any difficult moving are often signs of a larger problem. Also pay attention to whether your pain increases and the following signs that your flu is getting worse:

  • An increase in the severity of symptoms
  • High fever
  • Shaking chills
  • Shortness of breath

If you experience any of these symptoms seek immediate medical attention.

What Can I Do to Feel Better?

You can use over-the-counter pain medication in addition to a warm bath or a heating pad to relax muscles and relieve pain. Be sure to get plenty of rest and hydration for overall wellness.
