Pneumonia is an infection which affects the lungs. It can leave you very sick. Symptoms of Pneumonia include coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing. Symptoms and illness can vary from mild to severe. Older adults, babies, and those with chronic health problems are more likely to experience severe pneumonia.

Diagnosis is completed by a doctor who performs an examination including a chest x-ray and/or blood tests. Pneumonia is treatable. Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Viral pneumonia is usually also treated with antibiotics to prevent further complications. Always take all antibiotics even if symptoms disappear.

Always get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Cough symptoms can be alleviated with a cough medicine. If needed, a doctor may prescribe a stronger cough medicine.

Pneumonia can be prevented by avoiding contact with those sick with the flu, cold, measles, or chicken pox. Pneumonia is a common complication of these illnesses. Always wash your hands often or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
